CHOOSING A MOVER:
• Choose the kind of mover you need for your situation such as a relocation service, interstate moving company, local mover, pack-and-stack service, household shipper or trucking service.
• Talk to friends, family, co-workers and neighbors for personal recommendations and warnings.
• Call several recommended companies and ask how long they have been in business, how much experience their packers and drivers have, if they offer storage services and if they are licensed for interstate transport.
• Verify that the mover is licensed and regulated. You can obtain this information from your state’s Department of Transportation (DOT) or Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
• Find out if the mover is a member of a trade organization like the American Movers Conference. This will make it easier if you need to resolve a dispute.
• Check the company’s file with the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints filed against it.
• Narrow your choices down to a few companies and ask for written estimates.
• Choose a mover
CHOOSING A STORAGE UNIT:
• Determine how much space you need. Storage units in many sizes. For instance, a five feet by ten feet unit will hold the contents of a typical one bedroom apartment if packed tightly. Another common size of storage unit is ten feet by ten feet. This size of storage unit can hold the contents of a two bedroom apartment or home.
• Determine how long you will need the unit. If you only need the storage unit for one or two months, then price and contract terms should be deciding factors. If you need the unit long term, you will want to give more weight to the amenities that the facility offers.
• Find out if the rate is a move-in special or an ongoing rate. Many storage facilities offer special move-in rates to entice potential customers. Their goal is to get you to sign a contract without continuing to shop around. Be sure to ask questions before signing a contract with a move-in rate. Ask how long the move-in rate lasts and what the regular rate is for the unit. If you are going to need the unit long term you will want to compare both regular rates and move-in specials.
• Some storage facilities require a deposit. When you are comparing facilities, be sure to ask how much the deposit is and what the terms are for getting the deposit back when you move your belongings out of the storage unit.
• Find out what the terms are for moving out. Even if you won’t be moving your stuff out of the storage unit for some time, you will want to know what the facility’s terms are before committing to anything. Most storage facilities rent space month-to-month which means you can leave at any time. However, some facility’s require you to notify them 30 days in advance or risk getting charged for an additional month.
• Find out what amenities the storage facility offers. There are a variety of amenities offered by storage facilities. Some facilities have climate controlled units, which means that the units are kept at a certain temperature and sometimes at certain humidity. This type of amenity can be good if you have valuable items or collectibles that can be damaged by extreme changes in temperature or humidity. Other amenities offered by storage facilities include fences, gates, security systems, extended hours, padlocks, and on-site management.
• Ask to take the contract home with you. Reading a contract for the first time during the sign up process can be dangerous. First, the storage facility office is often not the best place to concentrate on sometimes difficult-to-understand legalese. Second, the manager is usually waiting for you to finish and sign, which puts pressure on you. Due to a combination of factors people often just skim the document and sign it without fully understanding the terms and conditions to which they are agreeing. If you take the contract home, you can take you time reading it. This will give you the opportunity to write down questions you have regarding the document that you can ask to be clarified before signing. Also, you can compare different contracts and see which one provides you with the fairest terms.
• The best way to choose a storage facility is to consider all your options carefully, and then choose the one that works best for you. This is obviously easier said than done. Managers have sales pitches that are very convincing and they will entice you with the move-in special. To make sure you don’t get lured in by sales tactics, make a list of your requirements for the storage unit and questions that you want to ask. Keep this list in your hand while you tour the facility and remember to check it. Get information about each facility first and make your decision later when you can compare each facility and determine the one that best fits your needs.
